Can You Deduct Eyeglasses on Taxes?

Yes, you can deduct the cost of eyeglasses in the US and Canada if you meet certain requirements.

If they itemize deductions, the IRS allows taxpayers to deduct medical expenses, including prescription eyeglasses. On the other hand, the CRA also permits taxpayers to claim prescription eyeglasses on their tax return.

Medical expenses can be deducted from your taxes, but only if they are directly related to the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, or prevention of an illness or disease.

This means everyday purchases, like eyeglasses worn purely for style, generally do not qualify. However, if the glasses are medically necessary, they may be deductible as part of your medical expenses.

To claim your eyeglasses as a deduction, you will need to file a Schedule A form for itemized deductions, which can be accessed on the IRS website.

Since the deduction applies only to medical expenses that exceed 10% of your adjusted gross income (AGI), you may need to combine other qualifying medical expenses such as dental and vision costs—to reach the threshold.

Timing is also important. The medical expense must have been paid within the tax year you are filing for. For example, if you received treatment in 2024 but paid for it in 2025, you can only claim it on your 2025 tax return.

Keeping detailed records and receipts is crucial for any medical expenses you intend to deduct. Documentation should include bills, prescriptions, and any relevant proof of payment.

If you have multiple medical expenses to itemize, hiring a tax pro may be helpful. They can ensure you claim all eligible deductions while avoiding errors that could lead to issues with your tax return.
